This is tragic. Black people have been trained to worship some dead old racist white man who wanted to send them all to Africa because he “freed” them. Which teaches them that they owe their very freedom not to themselves but to white people who, as she put it “gave them” their liberties. Liberties are not “given”. Black people are born with their liberty. White People infringed upon it, and eventually the worst aspect of that was brought to an end, but that isn’t a gift. If someone were to put you in a cage, you owe them no gratitude if they release you. They have not given you your liberty, they have simply gotten tired of trying to deprive you of what is rightfully yours.
The Emancipation Proclamation didn’t “free” anybody. It only applied to seceding states (where it held no power) and excluded Union States where there were slaves.
As Lincoln’s Secretary of State William Seward put it
“We show our sympathy with slavery by emancipating slaves where we cannot reach them and holding them in bondage where we can set them free.”
Lincoln didn’t give a fuck about you. You don’t need to be thankful to him for anything.
