Series #70: Kamen Rider

Hey There!

I know it has been a while but never fear! Just because the outside world is scary and full of the unknown, doesn’t mean the inside has to be! Since my job has closed Down for the next 12 weeks, what better way to spend that time watching television I normally wouldn’t get a chance to experience and writing about it, Ya know, Kind of what I do best.

If you have a roku , then you can take advantage of Pluto TV, and even better their brand new channel, Tokushoutsu, which shows live action television programs from Japan’s Bygone era. Think Karen Rider, Ultraman Leo and more! The channel has only been live for a few days, but they’re constantly adding new content to it, so it has quickly become my favorite.

Originally airing in 1971, Kamen Rider follows a half Cyborg/ half man, named Takeshi Hongo, who has a special suit and fights an evil organization caalled Shocker. They want to do terrible things to the world to finance their evil plans, and with the help of Takeshi and his friends has a tough time getting anything done.

Now I know of Kamen Rider, from just enjoying anime and Japanese Culture but I honestly had never gotten the opportunity to check it out, until now, with this subtitled version on Tokushoutsu, and I am so thankful that it exists!

Here are three reasons why you should give it a look.

1. It’s cheesy Af. I don’t know about ya’ll but I love a good cheesy oldie! It’s one of my favorite things about older television programs, the main reason that I’m drawn to series like Batman ‘66, Matlock and the like. Situations that wouldn’t happen normally, that are filled with campiness, and fun characters.

2. It’s a Japanese culture icon! Not only do you get to experience something that most of us are MUCH TOO YOUNG to have seen, in its prime condition. Nothing better than an original program with its original English subtitles right?

3. The Characters are adorable. Come learn about Takeshi and the crew. Wonder why Ruriko doesn’t get more air time as a detective with me. Try and decipher what exactly is Shockers, true evil plan. And finally count all the awesome creatures, that Kamen Rider gets to defeat.

Honestly, the only downside to watching it this way, is that it isn’t a marathon, you don’t know what episode you’re on, and your bouts of binge watching maybe interrupted by other worthy television shows such as Ultraman Leo. All in All, a perfectly worthy use of your time, if I do say so myself.

What are you doing to keep yourself occupied during the quarantine?
