Cinema #81: The Willoughby’s

Hey Gang!

I’m back with another movie post, because I’ve been watching movies like nobody’s business lately. The Willoughby’s is an animated feature, about 4 siblings, who have both parents. That in itself is pretty rare, but not only are both parents still alive, but they are so in love with each other that there is no room left in their hearts for their children.

It is based on Lois Lowery’s beloved novel. I say that in quotes because I’ve never read the novel, and am only quoting the trailer. I really really loved the movie, so I may actually check out the book, but seeing how the movie damaged me, I’m not sure if I’ll actually follow through.

Our four siblings, decide that since their parents don’t “love them” they are going to create this elaborate plan to “orphan themselves” by sending their parents on a “death trip”, the parents fall for it, and head out, the children thinking that they would now have the home to themselves, are very shocked when the door opens to reveal a nanny.

All of the characters are really well developed and I had a place for each of them in my heart, but my favorite characters were Lois, the nanny, and Jane the sister. I won’t spoil the film, but I do want to let you know that the music made me cry, the way the children were treated made me cry, the things that the children went through made me cry.

If your emotions are anything like mine, you’re going to cry at this film. Its was pitched as a feel good movie, but honestly the children go through so much, all of the characters have really interesting arcs that wrap up nicely in the story and you should definitely give it a watch, its on Netflix.

If you’ve seen this film lets talk about it on Twitter!
