Cinema #55: Lupin The First

Hey Gang!

Over the weekend, I got the awesome privilege of seeing Lupin The First, the latest film in the series of Lupin The Third. If you haven’t had the wonderful opportunity to experience Lupin The 3rd, let me allucinate for ya. Lupin the 3rd, is the Grandson of the famous master thief, Arsene’ Lupin, (of French literature fame) and he goes on adventures all around the world with his crew; Daisuke Jigen, Sharpshooter, Goemon, Samurai, and Fujiko (antagonist). It’s been a manga, movie and anime series since the 70’s penned by Monkey Punch, who left us his legacy in 2019, when he passed.

My father introduced Lupin the 3rd to my sister and I at a young age and we’ve been fans every since. I’ve written about their crossovers with Detective Conan, and I’ve gotten Daisuke Jigen tattooed on me, so to say we’re fans is a bit of an understatement. When I heard this film was coming, I gathered up the family and we went to see it and although I didn’t cry, it was definitely an emotional rollercoaster.

Lupin The First goes back into history a bit by having Lupin go after The Bresson Diary, a completely gold Journal that holds the guidebook to a power the world is definitely not ready to have during World War II, and definitely not something Bresson wants the nazi’s to have. The animation is top notch, as Lupin and company travel the world to stop nazi’s from getting the power and helps get the diary to its rightful owner.

A few of my favorite things in this film was the sense of nostalgia, watching this film just reminded me of all the reasons I fell in love with the series in the first place. The animation alone pays the highest honor to its Legacy, and as a instrumental nerd, the music is amazing. the entire film is scored and performed by You and The Explosion Band, and to say that the OST has been on repeat would be an understatement.

I hold this movie as my newest Lupin Favorite and highly recommend it! Have you seen the film? Are you a Lupin The 3rd fan? Lets talk about it on Twitter!

Until Next Time,
