I’m so excited to tell you about How To Survive A Slasher on PUBLICATION DAY!

A few days ago I finished reading How to Survive A Slasher and I had so much fun! This LGBTQ+ YA thriller was such a blast! You’re following our NB main character, Cassieopea Jane, the oldest child in a family of survivers. In this small town, theres been a series of tragedies. They’re haunted by a serial killer, The Splatterville Werewolf whose struck not once but twice.

The first time The Satterville Werewolf struck, was at a summer camp, CJ’s father was one of the few survivors. The Second time, CJ’s father wasn’t so lucky, leaving his wife, and four children behind. CJ is the oldest, and as such, they and their mother run “life-saving” drills to keep the children on their toes just in case the wolf appears again.

Life is going on as it does, until they come home, and our voracious reader , Cj comes home to a book that she hasn’t ordered and is unsure why it was there. After dinner, she opens her package only to realize that its an unpublished manuscript by Moon Satter. An anonymous local writer thats turned her families tragedy into a cash grab. She is determined to have never read any of them, but is non plussed why she would receive essentially an arc of their new novel.

As they begin to start reading, because curiousity does grab the best of us, they realize that the novel is not only a continuation of the previous events, which would point to a new killer, but also that it hasn’t taken place yet, the novel is future tense. Worried that it might not just be fiction she goes into school the next day on the ready, when things begin to match the novel she takes it upon herself to try to save the character that is killed in the story.

When they reach the woodshop, they find a new person but the wolf shows up anyway and together they discover our first body. The story shoots off like a rocket at this point and keeps this momentum all the way until 60% when it begins to get kind of meta for no good reason and honestly kind of lost the plot for me.

I liked the conclusion, but I knew where it was going and I was right about the killer so all in all I’m giving it 🥕🥕🥕.5 and I recommend this novel! I had a lot of fun with the colorful characters and all of the fun horror and mystery tropes that were woven throughout the story.

Until Next Time,

Gabs
