I know it’s been a while, but I honestly just got lazy about writing up my arc reviews. I was putting them in at Netgalley, and that was pretty much it, honestly. With it being a new year, I have a renewed interest in getting caught up, so let’s hop right into it.
Just in time for October, I finished Let’s Split Up by Bill Wood. This YA novel was pitched to me as Scooby Doo meets Scream, and honestly, there is no better way to explain it. It’s one of the few novels whose tagline wasn’t actually false advertising.
This YA delivered exactly what it said it would. This was essentially a 396 page episode of Scooby-Doo, if Scooby-Doo did murder. It was very reminiscent of that crossover episode of Scooby-Doo and Supernatural if you remember that. Just not supernatural.
The one thing that always sticks with me when it comes to Scooby Doo is that the villain is always a human being, no matter how supernatural they appear, and I love that. This book has much of the same.
Three close-knit friends befriend a new girl, who arrives right before the town ghost story decides to start brutally murdering students who visit the abandoned Manor.
This small town has its own ghost story, The Carrington Ghoul. An abandoned, mansion that has been empty since the fire and tragic death of Mr. Carrington and his family. When the IT couple goes in and doesn’t come out again, people assume that it was a horrible freak accident, until the autopsy’s released.
I found the mystery easy to solve, but I enjoyed my time nonetheless. The writing was very easy to read, and I kind of flew through it. I’m hoping that the follow-up, Be Right Back, will have a more intricately built mystery. I gave it a 3.5 carrots, because as much as I did enjoy it, it was a bit simple for me.
Would highly recommend, if you’d like to just fly through a mystery or are looking for something relatively short to shore up your reading count for the year.
